Truths Universally Acknowledged: Swift Design Patterns as Jane Austen Heroes

Let's imagine Ada Lovelace reading Jane Austen, and compare some of my favorite design patterns with some of my favorite Jane Austen heroes.

Character In Science Fiction and Fantasy settings can literally come alive–be it via the talking flowers of Through The Looking Glass or the rage of Peter Quill’s creepy dad-planet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Are living settings a science fiction/fantasy extension of the classic “Hero Vs. Nature” story? CSS Frameworks for Democratizing View/Control
One of the biggest flaws with the Model-View-Controller paradigm is that it is typically applied within programming languages. Today's programming environment typically crosses several different environments, thus weakening typical coding practices. As HTML/CSS evolves much more of both the view and the control can be put within it. This includes enabling ordinary users to create rich web environments in place of flat blogging. We will cover how to use several different CSS frameworks (e.g. W3, Bootstrap) within user based environments. We will be using TopicHero.com.

Say you've been on the Internet before the Web existed, and the young punks just won't believe you. But we had an Internet before web browsers. Before cable modems.

Maybe you remember 56K modems? Well, that K is a big deal. Some of us had 0.0375K modems... and we built applications on it. We ran services. We had social networking, and news, and chat, all without a lick of JavaScript.

Beware the Slenderman argues that, for better and worse, online lore is the new Brothers Grimm, and it’s clear that the processes that produce folklore and religion have not stopped. What are the roots, benefits, and dangers of urban and online lore? And how can the products of modern folklore enrich science fiction and fantasy?

IT and Business Enhancement
In order to foster effective communication and collaboration within enterprise organizations, effective definitions for business roles, tasks, and responsibilities need to be created and communicated methodically and continually. Further, each role needs to continually be researching how they are realizing their role versus how that role is evolving in the larger world environment. We will be discussing how to accomplish these tasks using both the IT Maturity Method as well as cloud based tools such as TopicHero.com.

Time Management for Creative People
Time is the one thing we can't make more of--or can we? Time management is the "magic wand" that lets us do that; and those who are good at it can get astonishing amounts done while still honoring their other commitments. In this workshop, you'll learn the attitudes and behaviors that distinguish good time managers, including many you can start using immediately to reclaim time and lower stress. You'll also learn how to create a life that allows you to "live your values," including creativity, school, work, activism, and whatever else is important to you; and more generally how to thrive in a world that often seems hostile to those seeking to live an authentic life.

Martial Arts and Magic in Chinese Anime
Martial Arts and Magic play a significant role in modern Japanese Anime, and are somewhat westernized from a magic perspective. However, Martial Arts and Magic have a longer history within Chinese literature and mythology. Thus, when Martial Arts and Magic appear in Chinese Anime they have a tendency to more closely follow historical Chinese patterns. Two of these patterns are purely historical: Wuxia (Martial Hero) where there are supernatural fighting abilities, and Xianxia (Immortal Hero) which extends supernatural fighting to the level of magic and gods. The third pattern is that of Xuanhuan (Mysterious Fantasy) which goes beyond Xianxia by including modern elements and settings. Most of this literature is redone in films, TV, Video Games, and Manga. However, some of it is starting to appear in Anime (e.g. Tales of Demons and Gods) and is kick ass great.

The Evolution of the Star Wars Franchise
From “Get out of my office with the Star Wars movie proposal” to “How much do you want for the franchise?”
The Star Wars franchise is the recognized behemoth of the theaters. While many movie production companies are happy to earn a 50 million take, A Star Wars movie making less than $500 million worldwide would be considered a disaster. The movies, the animated series, the fandom have benefited immensely from the franchise being carried on from the hands of the creator, George Lucas, into the hands of Disney media empire. However, the question remains, can the Star Wars franchise survive in this new era of high expectations, cultural and political dynamics, and the demands of million fanboys and fangirls crying out for satisfaction. This presentation by Lady Ana and Professor X (from Planet Claire) is meant to be enjoyed by all, the faithful (05/25/1977), the hardcore fans, newly immersed fans, and the folks who know nothing about the series at all. These elements include both communication and character techniques. Objective elements include management, organization (e.g. delegation, escalation), extent, business culture, and vision. We will be focusing primarily on the objective elements as they have associated business related measures as well as associated tuning and improving.

Pandemic in Real Life: Influenza 1918 and 2018
A deadly contagion begins in animals kept at a military facility, then mutates to infect thousands of soldiers. From there, it spreads worldwide, killing more people than the war itself.

The plot of a horror movie? Perhaps -- but it's also the story of the 1918 "Spanish" flu.

This session will review some factors that made the 1918 flu so deadly, and what we've learned about influenza over the past century. Why are CDC researchers concerned with small-scale agricultural techniques? What are the differences between the flu vaccine year to year, and brand to brand? Ways to predict, prevent, and treat influenza will be discussed.

After the training, the floor opens to questions and 1 on 1 assistance for account security upgrading, whether that means configuring a password manager for the first time, changing insecure passwords, or upgrading all available accounts to use 2FA, we're here to make your online life that much more secure!

Gender & Artificial Intelligence
Gender is an innate part of human existence. However, gender is not innate to our creations. When we design something inanimate to imitate gender, it impacts our society as a whole, especially when we gender our artificial intelligence. We have a tendency to gender "assistant" AIs female and independent AIs male, such as Siri vs Watson, translate non-gendered languages to have gender, and allow our conversational AI to adopt gendered biases. To complicate matters, open-source data used to train AI machine learning algorithms are often biased. How can we use gender progressively while also meeting user needs, and how can we improve our algorithms with the data available?

The Narrative Art of Agile Stories
As a STORY CREATOR I need a BETTER WAY TO CREATE STORIES so that MY STORIES STOP SUCKING. Despite copious documentation and a very "simple" template, people that are responsible for creating user stories still struggle. Creating a narrative "story" as a first step increases understanding, creates better stories and acceptance criteria, lends context to features being requested, gives you whiter teeth and a brighter smile, and eliminates hokey and unwieldy user stories forever. We will talk about the power of the narrative, how to create the narrative that people care to listen to, and how to turn that narrative into agile/scrum/etc story components.

Race for the galaxy
players build galactic civilizations by playing game cards in front of them that represent worlds or technical and social developments. Some worlds allow players to produce goods, which can be consumed later to gain either card draws or victory points when the appropriate technologies are available to them. These are mainly provided by the developments and worlds that are not able to produce, but the fancier production worlds also give these bonuses.

Regex for Everyone: Bend Text to Your Whim
Regular Expressions (regex) are a powerful pattern matching tool you can use to supercharge find-and-replace. You can use it to find all the email addresses on a page, extract dates, check password strength and so much more. While often used by programmers who appreciate their versatility and concision, Regex are useful for anyone who works with text -- regardless of whether you’re an author, a researcher, a student, or something else entirely. Best of all, regex are easy to learn -- “complex” searches are built out of the same handful of simple building blocks.

At this talk, you’ll learn how to:

- create a custom regex from scratch
- extract every email addresses on a webpage to a spreadsheet using a tool the speaker built
- batch rename files based on their current name using capture groups
- search across multiple files simultaneously using `grep`
- play a regex crossword to level up your new skills

The Case of the Monster User Story That Ate Sheboygan
Who do you call when your agile process is broken, when you’re suffering from "clogging of the iterations" and your user stories have become monsters which threaten to devour your entire Release Train? There are monsters living under your bed and they want to eat you – In agile they are called User Stories. This will be run like a work shop, so please bring in your most troubling User Stories for an open discussion. I will provide a case study workshop to get the conversation rolling. I will be using the INVEST criteria plus a few extra’s to evaluate User Stories. We will take a walk-through of User Stories using the specific:
Independent – Is it self-contained, without inherent dependencies on other User Stories?
Negotiable – Is there room for a discussion?
Valuable – Does it deliver value to the stakeholders?
Estimable – You must always be able to estimate the size of a User Story.
Small – It should not be so big as to become impossible to plan or prioritize.
Testable – You must be able to verify that solution is correct.

Turning Newsletters into Collaborative Intelligence
Collaborative Intelligence is the combination of multiple people, along with multiple computational resources and provides the most powerful reasoning available. Media is evolving from centralized to peer to peer. In this presentation we will discuss how to create and evolve your newsletters. This will be of value to both independents as well those within larger corporations, as both groups need to engage their readers in this evolving world. Tools reviewed include: creating rich topic-based news source environments to help identify content; rich webpage creation; chat tools; archiving; sharing the journalists reasoning process through source links, source search tools, and source feeds. We will be using TopicHero.com.

Muddling Through The Middle Bits: What Comes After Junior and Before Senior
There’s a ton of advice out there for junior developers; how to grow your skills, how to contribute effectively without a lot of experience, how to ask good questions. Likewise, there’s a lot of good advice for senior developers on how lead and mentor effectively and how to leverage their knowledge and experience. Left out are the people in between those two extremes: the developers who aren’t junior anymore, but haven’t risen to truly “senior developer” status. How do you get from junior to senior? Perhaps it's just a matter of time: Junior Dev + 5 years = Senior Dev? Is it some combination of depth and breadth of knowledge? Are team skills or technical ones the most important in this transition? How do you know you've crossed into senior territory? For that matter, how do you know you're no longer a junior? Let’s explore this squishy middle area, its landmarks and signposts, and try to find a personalized map of the mid-career.

DC vs Marvel, The Saga Continues.
DC and Marvel are both building Movie and TV ‘verses, and their approaches recall the earlier days of each company. Marvel emphasizes continuity and, as much as possible, keeping everything in one universe. They even appear to be undercutting some characters not under the Disney umbrella. DC creates various universes that do not all cross over, which typifies the approach their comics took prior to the mid-1960s, when many of their characters only sporadically or selectively crossed over (some not at all) and events in one comic had no impact on events in the other. What drives the differing approaches? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

Alternative (and Standard) Physics Spectrum
There are lots of alternative physics models out there. In this presentation we will not be looking at a specific model, but rather a map of how a large number of different alternative and conventional models fit together cohesively. Further, the map is a methodology for classifying new models. Additionally, we will do an exposition of lessons from Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence that can be applied to Physics, as well as other sciences and realms of reasoning (e.g. law). Note the primary motivation for this map is NOT the inclusion of alternative physics models. The primary motivators are the severe computational issues of conventional Physics Maps in general, as well as the large bodies of observed data that are traditionally ignored by academia.

Using Scrum and Agile Techniques to Hack Your Life
We will discuss how to apply agile/scrum techniques to your own life, using “writing my novel” as an example. Agile/Scrum has been popularized by software development but it also applies to non IT work. In essence it’s applying systems things to making small incremental changes. It’s an attempt to avoid the pitfall of traditional long term, predictive planning models, which we are all too familiar with.
Along the way we will re-purpose the Scrum framework and basic agile techniques for your own life and your current projects. Maybe we can provide a few tips based on proven techniques, to help you along the path of personal change and accomplishments. Bring your mind, preferably open and your project and maybe prepared to change your approach.

PowerPoint Improv returns with a twist! Volunteers from the audience will be divided into two improv teams. The game will be similar in nature (and graphics) to the old Hollywood Squares game show. Each round, each team will select one box in an attempt to claim it as an X or an O. An improv topic/scene/game will come up (All themed towards Penguicon interests) and both teams will have up to 3 minutes to perform the challenge. The audience will then vote on which team performed better and that team then claims the square. The winning team is the first to complete a tic tac toe. A New Way to Play: Utilizing Gaming for Social Skills
This presentation will cover the use of table top role playing games in a therapeutic setting. In a therapeutic setting, the therapist takes on the role of running the game, while participants select and play characters in a safe setting. The games are designed to encourage participants to develop social skills, such as problem solving, conflict resolution, perspective taking, collaboration, anger management, social anxiety, and impulse control. The therapist is able to challenge participants in areas that they need help, and can work with participants to process discoveries made during each session. This method is more engaging than traditional talk therapy, and allows participants to actively practice coping skills in a safe space.

Joyful Productivity: How to Overcome Procrastination and Perfectionism and Rediscover Your Prolific Self
Inspiration exists and is available to everyone at nearly any time. Underproductivity, procrastination, and blocks are solvable problems. The secret to achieving a state of near-perpetual inspiration (a.k.a., “flow”) is to switch from a scarcity to an abundance mindset, and also from a shame/blame mindset to one focused on problem-solving. In this workshop by Hillary Rettig, author of the best-selling The 7 Secrets of the Prolific, we'll delve deep into the heart of underproductivity so you can see, once and for all, what forces are holding you back. Then we'll discuss solutions—lots of them—that you can start using immediately to boost your productivity and reduce stress. Code Names : Deep Undercover

Two rival spymasters know the secret identities of 25 agents. Their teammates know the agents only by their CODENAMES.

In Codenames: Deep Undercover, two teams compete to see who can make contact with all of their agents first. Spymasters give one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the board. Their teammates try to guess words of the right color while avoiding those that belong to the opposing team. And everyone wants to avoid the assassin.
